C2PA specification

The technical standard behind signed assertions about the origin and editing history of digital content.

The C2PA specification defines a way to attach cryptographically signed assertions to digital content. Those assertions can describe who created or handled an asset, which tools were used, and what edits were recorded. When the chain is present and valid, it gives a reviewer a structured account of the file’s declared history.

That history has a precise scope. A valid credential does not prove that the scene shown in an image happened, and a missing credential does not prove that the file was manipulated. Credentials can also be removed by ordinary publishing workflows. We reference the specification to distinguish evidence about content handling from broader claims about truth.
